Answers

1) Who is eligible to participate in the FAST Commuter Check for Bicycling Program?

Anyone who is a resident within Arlington Potomac Yard or an employee of an Arlington Potomac Yard business is eligible to participate.

2) Can I belong to Commuter Check for Bicycling and another FAST Potomac Yard program like the 9S Subsidy Program or the Carpool/Vanpool Program?

No. You can only belong to one subsidy program at a time. You should select your primary method of commuting or the one that gives you the best benefit:
  • Commuter Check for Bicycling: Up to $20/mo
  • 9S: Up to $34/mo
  • Carpool: Up to $100/quarter for your pool if you are a FAST Gas Pass Member
  • Vanpool: Up to $200/quarter for your pool if you are a FAST Gas Pass Member

3) What is the maximum benefit that I can receive per month from the Commuter Check for Bicycling Program?

$20. This limit is put in place by the Federal Government.

4) Can I use the $20/mo towards Capital Bikeshare?

At the present time, Capital Bikeshare is not a participating member in the Commuter Check for Bicycling Program; however, you would be able to use the funds at a participating bike shop that accepts Commuter Check for Bicycling for any accessories you may need, such as a helmet or a water bottle.

5) Am I allowed to participate in Commuter Check for Bicycling and the Pedal Free 24-4-Me Program?

Yes, because Pedal Free 24-4-Me is not a subsidy program. It is a chance to try a one-day Capital Bikeshare membership for free (user fees apply). It is the only exception we allow. Pedal Free 24-4-Me is available once per quarter.

6) I submitted my Commuter Check for Bicycling application and the Bicycling Verification Form. Now what?

Our Administrators will determine if you are eligible to receive the Commuter Check for Bicycling benefit. If approved, you will see a check number and Coupon Begin and End Dates on your Profile.

7) How long is my application good for/What is the subsidy period?

Because bicycling is seasonal for many commuters, the subsidy period lasts 3 months. After 3 months, you will need to submit a Commuter Check for Bicycling Renewal Form and a new Bicycling Verification Form.

8) I am showing on my Profile that I have a check(s) available to me. Now what?

You may either redeem the check (ask that FAST mail it to you) immediately or you can accumulate checks (one each month as long as your registration is current) and then redeem several at a time (ask that FAST mail you several or all of your available checks). It is recommended that you allow checks to accumulate on your profile – That way you can request to redeem them only when you know you’re going to spend them immediately and for something special.

9) Where can I spend Commuter Check for Bicycling?

There are many participating bike shops throughout the region. For a list of participating shops, please click here.

10) I want to buy a bike lock for $25.00 and I have $40.00 in Commuter Check for Bicycling cash. Will I get change?

No. There is no option for change, cash back, or a refund. In this instance, you might want to consider using one $20.00 Commuter Check for Bicycling check and paying the rest using a different method of payment.

11) I lost one of my checks. Can I get a replacement?

No. FAST is unable to provide replacement checks.

12) One of my checks expired. Can I get a new one?

No. FAST is unable to provide replacement checks.

13) One of my checks is about to expire. Can I switch it with one that isn’t going to expire so soon?

No.

14) Sometimes I bike to work and sometimes I take the 9S. What do you suggest?

Since you can only be in one subsidy program at a time, select the subsidy program that makes the most sense to you. The subsidy for 9S is $34/mo and Commuter Check for Bicycling is $20/mo.

15) I am currently a member of the CommuterCheck for Bicycling Program and I want to switch to the 9S Subsidy Program. How do I do this?

In order to switch subsidy programs, your current subsidy must be up for renewal or have already expired. If you are in the middle of your 3 month CommuterCheck for Bicycling allotment, you will need to wait until you receive notice from FAST that it is time for you to renew. If you believe you fit this criteria, please click here to be redirected to the Contact Us portion of the website to submit your request. If you are unsure of whether or not you qualify, please go to your profile page to check the expiration date of your CommuterCheck for Bicycling Subsidy.

16) I bike and ride Metro to work and I currently receive a transit subsidy from my employer. Can I use my transit subsidy from my employer and then apply for the CommuterCheck for Bicycling Program through FAST?

No. IRS regulations currently prohibit an individual from receiving two different types of subsidies (i.e. one transit subsidy and one biking subsidy), even if the two different subsidies are from different agencies. You can, however, apply to receive subsidies from both agencies, so long as you do not exceed the federal maximum level (see #14 – 9S Subsidy FAQs. The federal cap on bicycle subsidies stands at $20/mo from all agencies combined) and both subsidies are of the same type (i.e. two transit subsidies, one from each agency).
